ダイナマイト // Dynamite

Sponsored by: ML

Trivia:

  • I used to work with JOGMEC (Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation) and toured several mines in Japan.

Notes:

  • “loud enough to raise the dead”: lit. “loud enough to reach the underworld”.

  • “every day / is venomous”: is a play on words for “every day is lonely”, and the word “venomous” (venom-derived poison actually) is a one of Momoyo’s spell card signs; both of these traits play into the next lines of spell cards and “all you need is”.

  • “venomous” (p.s.): it specifically alludes to a poison made from forcing venomous creatures (e.g., centipedes, snakes, scorpions) to eat / cannibalize each other until only one is left standing (this explains many of the other spell card references).

  • “There’s no point in putting on airs!”: there’s a pun here between “There’d be no point” (tatasumai) and “(putting on) airs” (tatazumai), but I don’t think twisting the translation into a knot here would add anything.

  • “thunderous work”: the kanji for the word thunderous (symbolizing a multitude of carts/chariots) is swapped for one symbolizing a multitude of insects.

  • “If a dragon shows up…”: this stanza refers to the legend where a dragon princess seeks help from a warrior because a giant centipede is terrorizing her clan, the warrior kills the centipede with a shot to the head with his last arrow (in a fashion similar to Bard and Smaug in the Hobbit)

  • Tomakomai has one of the world’s largest above-ground oil reserves (in tanks). The name is Ainu-derived, meaning “marsh of a river that runs deep into the mountains”, there’s a also a weak pun at play here between Tomakomai and “not far” in the line (tomakomai / tookunai); it’s probably used here as a sort of Valhalla analog.

  • “seven and a half times” is a nod to a legend in which a hero defeated a giant centipede so large it was able to wrap itself around a large mountain seven and a half times.

  • “sparring among friends”: another set of semi-puns and a sort of made-up word (“sparring” punning off battle-royale style death matches) (goroshiai / koroshiai); this also likely is a call back to the venomous note.

  • “unprecedented and unparalleled”: is shorthand for “never before seen and never to be topped, victoriously emerging after countless battles, unprecedented and unparalleled throughout history…”
