I think it took me longer to type this all out than it took me to translate

There are little pieces of classical bits in the lyrics, so if you’re studying Japanese, look out for ’em!

Explanation of the lyrics:

I get the distinct feeling that this song’s lyrics are a little overblown (purposefully) in order to portray Toyosatomimi no Miko’s character. The basic gist (I know it’s confusing.. ^^;) is this: In the first stanza, Toyosatomimi no Miko first brings Buddhism to everyone/the common people. She chides someone who is mourning death and says that it’s all part of a cycle, and that it is inevitable (like words that bear the fruit of their meaning – analogy’s a little out there… ^^;). In the second stanza she states that Buddhism and its laws are natural and inevitable, if the trees and grasses could comprehend themselves they would have discovered the way before us. The third stanza illustrates the peace and security (and calming of the public masses) that religion gives – also the, if you ever thirst for more knowledge I’d be happy to tell you more. In the fourth stanza Toyosatomimi no Miko meets the first internal contradiction to her religion. She sees a beautiful arabesque laid with a corpse (in a mausoleum?) and the fact that it should be able to remain unchanging beside a corpse that has changed far too much – basically there’s an inequality – it is in part unfair that the arabesque should not change when the body does, but even more (showing her greed) it is unfair that the arabesque should be hidden away with a body that has no need for it. This also symbolizes that it is unfair that something should be made to die when it doesn’t need to (an inanimate object stored in a tomb) when it is so wonderfully beautiful. Basically, someone as wonderful and beautiful and powerful as her does not deserve to die if it is possible for her to live. The fifth stanza starts a split, as she preaches to a dying person, telling them that there is value in dying and going back to the center of all life (the great river) – she tells him to be enlightened (like her) and see the truth in her words, but she trails off, eventually just brags about her great power. It is here in the sixth stanza that she receives an invitation from Kaku Seiga to learn the mysteries of Taoism. In the seventh stanza, she accepts and becomes a 尸解仙 (hermit/master of Buddhism and Taoism who has [literally] escaped the trappings of death). Now immortality is trivial to her, and her power only grows. Eighth stanza. The scornful laughing of the arabesque… yeah that metaphor’s beyond me. Sorry. Ninth stanza. Toyosatomimi scornfully (I guess the metaphor in that last stanza works… sort of) preaches to the common people the religion that is below her now. Tenth stanza. Sort of a mirror of the first stanza, but sarcastic. In the eleventh stanza Toyosatomimi is getting tired of dealing with other people’s problems – ie. deal with it yourself – strife is good for you. Twelth stanza. The arabesque goes a little more wildly (perhaps it’s just laughing over Toyosatomimi’s fate, especially when she stops paying attention to others dying (saying “no matter how you might try to dam fate it will flow – ironic because it’s as if she were foretelling her power failing”), because she believes fate has no sway upon her. That is the end of the song. :3

“To what moon have you cast your gaze?” – I have no idea. Just saying. Either it has something to do with religion or the fact that you look skyward to hide your tears, i.e. what moon are you looking at – if you’re not looking at the moon – sort of thing.

What is an arabesque? Google image search it – it’s basically fancy plant like looking decorations – sort of like flowing arabic word art.

“There is value even in retrogression” – “value” and “retrogression” are homophones in Japanese, so it’s a pun.

“oh life continuing oft toward the great river!” – I’m thinking the lifestream from Final Fantasy VII.

“unveil” – the verb used is satoru, which used to mean “attaining enlightenment”

“curtain of fire” – danmaku.

“Would you defy, and shake free from fate?” – When Kaku Seiga Nyan Nyan lures Toyosatomimi no Miko to Taoism.

kimi wa izuko no tsuki wo miteita nanto orokashii ka kotoba ga mi wo tsuke

To what moon have you cast your gaze? What foolishness!
These words have only come to bear their fruit.
Though the flowers have withered, there is no need for your tears!
Only their form has changed, overworn clothing cast away.

All across the land as far as the gods might see,
the grasses and trees lift their thirsts to the dew
If they would know that the very water is sweet,
then law and order would impose itself out of the tedium

A promise made, the heart can continue to rest in peace
If a day comes when you seek reason, let us meet again

naniyue no towa kawaranu shiki wo motsu housouge ranbu suru hikari no wa
hai to kasu mi ni kakusu koto nado naki hazu yo taiyou ni utsushidashita fujouri

To what purpose for eternity does this floral arabesque
hold its unchanging color? This wildly dancing ring of light
Has no reason to be hidden in a body turned to ash!
What an absurdity to be laid bare under the sun!

There is value even in retrogression, O life continuing oft towards the great river!
With wisdom unveil the truth behind the curtain of fire striking the celestial sphere!
A great and powerful spiritual leader that takes deciphered poisons as love,
I understand troubles from out of the far ancient past

From upwind a message comes, crossing over a thousand miles:
”Would you defy, shake free from fate?”

shikainochi no hitokire fushi to wa tane wo makisodachi wo matsu nagi

After unraveling death, immortality is trivial,
a lapse in the wind waiting to spread and raise seeds
What calm, what peace – I can hear you, O ten desires!

naniyue no towa azakeru you ni warau housouge kuse no gokou ni sakiyo
yogoto mukaeru nodo wo oru hodo no melody
raise ni hirei wo wabitemo yoi to shite

To what purpose for eternity does this floral arabesque
laugh with scorn? Blossom, in the halo of this savior!
With each passing night I welcome a melody that would break one’s throat
As an apology to the next generation:

―逆らうことなきやう アミダに廻れ小人や―

-sakarau koto naki you amida ni maware kobito ya-

-Crowd around the Buddha O children, so that you do not disobey!-

To what moon have you cast your gaze? What foolishness!
 With eyelids trembling,
Let us part now, there is no need for your tears!
Only the form will change, overworn clothing cast away.

Learn from struggle, the lover without a tryst sickens
Take the tales you take with you and make them into a religion

naniyue ni sora norowashiku tawamureru housouge sekitomeraretemo nagare
chuu ni ukanda sono mi tote i ni kaisazu ni

For what reason do you flail accursedly in the sky, floral arabesque?
No matter how you might try to dam fate, it will flow
But I will stand upon this pillar and pay no mind
Washing my hands of this all, singing as I may.

Koumori

Not a big fan of Sally’s font choice this time around.. (my eyes… my eyes…) ^^;;;

The concept of (undead) corpses calling out to each other in their dreams is so gothic I don’t even… I mean really. Damn.

“Bats” because sleeping under the earth in caves. (and “caves” links to the following note)

“Effloresced memories” to effloresce is to erode in a specific way involving the extraction of water from concrete-like structures or stone forming crystals, which I think is AWESOME imagery for the context. Unrelated to the Japanese term, to effloresce also means “to flower, blossom, bloom”.

All in a lullaby
From me to you.

^Seriously, I can’t get enough of this artist… (Organ Derwald/”Orga”)

Requested by: Induviate

I guess you could say that this is to celebrate the fact that I finally got my C80 CDs in the mail (including Sally), but I’ve really got to get back and tackle all these requests of mine. D:

I do love translating songs like this though – you really get filled up with the emotion listening to the song again and again and again trying to convey the feeling that sort of soaks into you, listening and reading the lyrics again and again. That’s why I started doing this all in the first place. I guess that really at first it was to broaden my vocabulary and such, but the only songs that make my take out my dictionary are from Unlucky Morpheus (D:<) and etc. nowadays. Still translating poetry (lyrics included) is tough stuff, and doing this again and again and again helps build my internal thesaurus XD hahaha…

Enough of my rambling, you all just want the song translation right? (Although I met [sorta] someone who admitted she only visited my site for the pictures XD) Here you go.

I embrace my emotions, raise my feelings for you and they flutter
White like powdered snow towards you, to when love first blossomed in my heart
To when I first found your kindness – Memories from long ago,
Fragments of promises I gather all alone

All of these dancing flower petals
Play in the wind, swinging this way and that
But how long must I keep waiting in this dream?
Here wishing, in this place long out of season?

“Just a little longer!”
But these words I repeat to myself… just who are they for?

I gather these emotions, my feelings for you from when love first
Blossomed in my heart, as they flutter white like powdered snow towards you

In this dream I want to come true, I swim deeper and deeper into eternity
Where even the stars tell me freely why now
Everything is being swept away

In this dream I want to protect,
I wish that from out of the faintly blurring years and months
You’ll come and find me

All these images sway, carried on the wind unfading
But how long must I keep waiting in this dream?
Far from you, in this place long out of season?

All of these dancing flower petals
Disappear in the wind, and suddenly I realize
How long must I keep waiting in this dream?
Here wishing, in this place while the seasons end?

“I can’t wait any longer!”
These overflowing tears… just who are they for? … Is this your dream?

Farewells tie my nights together
I forget even our promises as my feelings quiet and
I reach for you, as if I were brushing powdered snow
Gathering alone the memories that blossomed in my heart

In this abyss of a dream that won’t come true, I swim deeper and deeper into eternity
Where I can’t even see the stars or comprehend the flow of time

In this dream I cannot protect, I still wish that
From out of the faintly disappearing years and months you’ll come and find me

^Soga needs more love.

Merami love with Sally. My third favorite from the album.

I’m a bit frustrated because I don’t think I’ve properly captured the feel of the song in the translation and that it doesn’t match quite well with the music (not that I’ve ever made lyrics match the beat of the music or anything, but feeling). See when I hear this song I think of Kurosaki Tamotsu from “文学少女”と飢え渇く幽霊 (Bungaku Shoujo v.2) – but when I read my translation I don’t get that feeling. So … well anyway, let’s see how you like it ^_^; maybe I’m just crazy.

I let some phrase connections stray for flow convenience. In “I feel a terror like waking from a / Nightmare that shows the world’s end” it is the terror that “tells of the world’s end” – I made it “shows” and let it link to nightmare because I thought I wouldn’t corrupt the image too much. >.>

Also, it’s not really clear in this stanza::

Countless cruelties eat away at me
In these rumblings of loss, screams go unheard
In this illusion where everything is rotten

::whether the screams are from the narrator or from the people the narrator’s performing cruelties on. It’s also not clear whether the cruelties are in fact the cruel feeling that’s painful to the narrator, or referring directly to cruelties the narrator has done in her greed to make her feel like she’s rotting, though I lean to the latter. (I floundered between saying “My countless cruelties” or not, but I decided ultimately not to make that great of a leap.)

The first stanza actually does not say that the ashen color that “pollutes” the author’s heart is glass dust, but only that her heart is glass, and that it’s being polluted with grey, and that an engraver is shaving away at it. I ended up rewording it the way I did to keep lines at a stable length and such. >.>

(Can you tell from the notes that I’m not 100% happy with this? <.<)

As I hurt others it only digs deeper
So I run, erase my existence

More Sally, w/ Ranko this time.

MIRROR sounds like ミーラ MIIRA which is the Japanese/Portuguese word for Zombie.

Damn the guitar is cool on this one.

“And then I stopped” is more my spin on it, it could easily go without it, it’s just separating つなぎ止めていた (which means to seal up a wound) so it’s つなぎ続けていた (continued to tie together) THEN 止めていた makes me feel that she completely forgot everything in the end – and we get hints that she’s forgetting things more and more as the song goes on so it makes sense to me, at least. – If you don’t want to go with that you can read it as the fact that she completely healed up her “wounds” (and then forgot :3)

When I woke up I realized
My heart was a wreck; I was alone
Before the night dawns
Tell me my true form, what I am now

It wasn’t like I was lost, just
Words were empty, and here
I’d turn, searching for myself in the shadows
But I had begun to forget even what that meant

From dried poison springs a dream

And I ask time
Over and over again
And the hourglass set on its head would
Take my wounds from then
And tie together the memories I could not return

This place, this rough oval
Shooting stars swimming in the darkness
Are these images from when I was young?
As they pass through my mind I smile bitterly

Those distant affections, were all an illusion?

In this created form I continue to dance
Forgetting the marionette wires created for me

But it reflects in the mirror…

And I ask time
Over and over again
And the hourglass set on its head would
Take my wounds from then
And tie together the memories I could not return

And broken time asks me
Over and over again
And my manipulated silhouette disappears into the sand
Just searching for an answer
I kept tying together the memories I could not return.
 And then – I stopped.
