Plaza On-Impulse

First of all, I’m sorry for taking so long.

Then,

I’m going to go ahead and say this translation was very, very hard. These lyrics are a complete mess. Given the “impulse” I think it’s possible that it’s on purpose, and maybe with the intention of portraying a warped time, but nothing’s really linked together properly at all, and I could only barely guess at many of the metaphors, so instead of trying to explain any awkward guesses, this translation aims to be as plain and undecorated as possible, while still making at least the slightest bit of sense when transitioned to an English sentence structure.

If I am to offer up any hints I found, the knives can be knives, or like sunbeams, burning and choking, or the silver itself can be anti-vampire – strangely the word for “silver” is the same used in “silver coins” – I don’t know if that means anything. Some of the stanzas refer to Touhou events, like the things that drift on her shoulders from a distant land, a season waited desperately for? “Perfect Cherry Blossom”, a treasure map showing where I want to go? “Undefined Fantastic Object”, festival of fog and red child (miko)? “Embodiment of Scarlet Devil”, others very vaguely point to Imperishable Night, but I’m not sure of much else, though I’m tempted to assign all of the games to some phrase here or there.

This song was weird so I made sure I was drunk before I started translating it.

It’s Marisa and Patchouli and a disfunctional psuedo relationship of conflicting desires of fantasy, memory and reality. What a carnival!

Notes:
“know too much for their own good” links to a word that means “someone whose -unexperienced- sexual knowledge far outstrips her age”.

I think it took me longer to type this all out than it took me to translate コウモリ…

There are little pieces of classical bits in the lyrics, so if you’re studying Japanese, look out for ’em!

Explanation of the lyrics:

I get the distinct feeling that this song’s lyrics are a little overblown (purposefully) in order to portray Toyosatomimi no Miko’s character. The basic gist (I know it’s confusing.. ^^;) is this: In the first stanza, Toyosatomimi no Miko first brings Buddhism to everyone/the common people. She chides someone who is mourning death and says that it’s all part of a cycle, and that it is inevitable (like words that bear the fruit of their meaning – analogy’s a little out there… ^^;). In the second stanza she states that Buddhism and its laws are natural and inevitable, if the trees and grasses could comprehend themselves they would have discovered the way before us. The third stanza illustrates the peace and security (and calming of the public masses) that religion gives – also the, if you ever thirst for more knowledge I’d be happy to tell you more. In the fourth stanza Toyosatomimi no Miko meets the first internal contradiction to her religion. She sees a beautiful arabesque laid with a corpse (in a mausoleum?) and the fact that it should be able to remain unchanging beside a corpse that has changed far too much – basically there’s an inequality – it is in part unfair that the arabesque should not change when the body does, but even more (showing her greed) it is unfair that the arabesque should be hidden away with a body that has no need for it. This also symbolizes that it is unfair that something should be made to die when it doesn’t need to (an inanimate object stored in a tomb) when it is so wonderfully beautiful. Basically, someone as wonderful and beautiful and powerful as her does not deserve to die if it is possible for her to live. The fifth stanza starts a split, as she preaches to a dying person, telling them that there is value in dying and going back to the center of all life (the great river) – she tells him to be enlightened (like her) and see the truth in her words, but she trails off, eventually just brags about her great power. It is here in the sixth stanza that she receives an invitation from Kaku Seiga to learn the mysteries of Taoism. In the seventh stanza, she accepts and becomes a 尸解仙 (hermit/master of Buddhism and Taoism who has [literally] escaped the trappings of death). Now immortality is trivial to her, and her power only grows. Eighth stanza. The scornful laughing of the arabesque… yeah that metaphor’s beyond me. Sorry. Ninth stanza. Toyosatomimi scornfully (I guess the metaphor in that last stanza works… sort of) preaches to the common people the religion that is below her now. Tenth stanza. Sort of a mirror of the first stanza, but sarcastic. In the eleventh stanza Toyosatomimi is getting tired of dealing with other people’s problems – ie. deal with it yourself – strife is good for you. Twelth stanza. The arabesque goes a little more wildly (perhaps it’s just laughing over Toyosatomimi’s fate, especially when she stops paying attention to others dying (saying “no matter how you might try to dam fate it will flow – ironic because it’s as if she were foretelling her power failing”), because she believes fate has no sway upon her. That is the end of the song. :3

Notes:

“To what moon have you cast your gaze?” – I have no idea. Just saying. Either it has something to do with religion or the fact that you look skyward to hide your tears, i.e. what moon are you looking at – if you’re not looking at the moon – sort of thing.

What is an arabesque? Google image search it – it’s basically fancy plant like looking decorations – sort of like flowing arabic word art.

“There is value even in retrogression” – “value” and “retrogression” are homophones in Japanese, so it’s a pun.

“oh life continuing oft toward the great river!” – I’m thinking the lifestream from Final Fantasy VII.

“unveil” – the verb used is satoru, which used to mean “attaining enlightenment”

“curtain of fire” – danmaku.

“Would you defy, and shake free from fate?” – When Kaku Seiga Nyan Nyan lures Toyosatomimi no Miko to Taoism.

Finally I got a hold of the Sally album booklet! :3

The rap makes up prologue and commentary, the singing is her song.

I interpret this song with the omnipresent nature of Kyouko in mind. She lives in a “dungeon” (fortress turned cage) before the gate of the (Myouren) shrine, but all roads (I would assume into the mountains) lead to her. This would make sense if you could consider that she exists where sound exists (above a certain altitude). She only gets to look at the sky and the rest of the world in a glimpse as her echo sounds. This makes sense with her “living in cracks of time” as well as how she lives in the cracks of the mountains, like the mountain flowers locked in crevices beside her.

I’ve been scatter-brained recently so forgive the messy post/notes, you can just skip to the lyrics below.

Notes:

On the title:
The symbol 眠 used means “sleep”, but unlike 寝 is not associated with “lying down” but with “closing ones eyes”. It is also associated with death, and given the nature of Ten Desires, I wouldn’t be surprised. Plus, the sort of prologue makes it seem like the narrator could once have been human, this is her death. ^Worded in such a way that the green can be modifying either her eyes or the “thousand countries”. – I went with green eyes, because well – they’re green – they just don’t happen to be in the image above.

“But once when I was asked if there was really any meaning in this life”
^the word used for “life” is “walk” so life and death doesn’t really play into it.

I used “aberration” for “mononoke” – If you’ve seen the show “Mononoke” you can liken it more to that.

“I have even been likened to stone before”
^We all know how echos work right?

“Rose-colored, deep and quiet, a way to show myself, and my sutra”
^”my sutra”, meaning something that she’ll repeat again and again to herself

“There’s no way I can leave this place”
^It’s also possible to interpret this line as “my sobs won’t carry”, because “leaving this place” doesn’t have a set subject.

By the way, when she calls her own lyrics “Rose-Colored” that’s not exactly a complement.
