Re:Re:

I’ve been having a translation block at the worst possible time, so I decided to translate a song for a change of pace. I watched Erased/Boku dake ga Inai Machi – It was recently brought to my attention when I saw the trailer for the live action version in theaters. I used to listen to AKFG a lot back in high school and early college (before Touhou), so I knew the OP immediately (even though it was a different version than what I was used to) and was surprised I hadn’t translated this song before.

Sugita Hiromi was the cutest.

kimi wo matta
boku wa matta
togirenai ashita mo sugiteitte
tachidomatte furikaette
tomedonai kyou wo nagekiatta

I waited
I waited for you
Each tomorrow passing me by, one after the other
Where the me from tomorrow stopped and looked back
Lamenting my endless present days, and I lamented back

kioku datte towa ni natte nokoranai mon’ to omoishitte
boku wa zutto kakimushitte kokoro no sumikko de naita

Having learned the hard way that even memories aren’t gonna last forever
I curled up in a corner of my heart and cried, scratching and tearing at myself

soshite douka nakusanaide yo tte
kouka shita, sugiru hibi wo
koukai shiten’ da yo tte sou iinogashita ano hi

“Please don’t lose these memories”, I cried
Under the bridge, at each passing day
That day I should have told you, “I regret everything”

tsunagiatta toki mo atta
hodokenai kan’jou mochiyotte sore ga boku no subete datta
sore mo tatta ima nakushitan’ da

There was once a time when we were connected
We each had these firm emotions for one another, and that was everything for me
But even those emotions, I’ve lost them now

katachi datte toki ga tatte kawariyuku mono to omoishitte
boku wa zutto kakimushitte fusagareta kyou wo uran’da

Having learned the hard way that with time, even the form of things changes
I cursed these days I just can’t seem to get past, scratching and tearing at myself

soshite douka nakusanaide yo tte
koukashita, sugiru hibi wo
koukai shiten’ da yo tte sou iinogashita ano hi

“Please don’t lose these memories”, I cried
Under the bridge, at each passing day
That day I should have told you, “I regret what I did”

kimi wo matta
boku wa matta
togirenai ashita mo sugiteitte
boku wa kyou mo kakimushitte wasurenai kizu wo tsuketeirun’da yo
kimi ja nai to sa

I waited
I waited for you
Each tomorrow passing me by, one after the other
Where again today I scratch and tear at myself-You see, I’m making a wound so I can’t forget
That it can’t be anyone but you.

After Dark

I just finished 朝顔, the 6th book in the Hikaru series, but I have decided that I’m not going to write any more reviews for it. Any more reviews at this point will take too much effort to not be spoiler-tastic, and I really haven’t felt like reviewing these anywhere near the extent I did for the 文学少女 series. However, the series has gotten better and I still recommend it. 315264 from least to most favorite volumes by the way.

It looks like I haven’t translated anything in a while… I tried to force myself to translate a song last week and the week before that, but in the end I thought it best to take a break and just drown myself in books.

This week I’m going to interview for a JET CIR position, and if all goes well I might be off to Japan in a few months.

Anyway, so I wanted to translate something nostalgic, that I probably should have translated a long time ago, but never got around to. I had no idea this was a Bleach opening until after I had listened to it over 300 times. In fact, now I almost always equate AKFG songs with 四畳半神話大系 or other stories by the same author.

Notes:

The cover of the album art for this songs single is a rooster. Everything makes sense now doesn’t it?

Ameagari no Kibou – Hope After the Rain

^Very Unrelated, however – I sleep like that, because it’s so humid, humid ties into the rain, ie. into the song. :D

Ohayou Gozaimasu!! It’s 4:42 (am) and I’m in Tokorozawa, Saitama, Japan!! :D

Ever since I left my mother’s house just outside of DFW, Texas I travelled for *calculates* 22 hours. There were some delays with other people in the group not getting here or there, and traversing Tokyo by bus rather than train takes a lot longer than you’d expect. A lot longer. Anyway Japan is awesome. My host family is awesome. The city is awesome. Everything really. I’m even going to consider my getting halted at immigration, shuffled into a room and interrogated because someone read my visa info wrong – awesome.

So here I am, with no interwebs, typing up my post in notepad. (o/ I haven’t checked my email, bank account, or twitter account in about 36 hours. It’s crazy. Still, though it’ll take time to get used to – I think I’ll like this unplugged thing, and it’ll force me to get some real studying and work done. I can understand about 75% of what my host family says, but when I respond it’s pretty broken. I really should have attended those conversation tables…

I listened to this song a lot on the plane (Korean Air is awesome by the way) so I thought I’d translate it when I landed. I’m only getting to it now – after a bath last night I fell soundly asleep,… for 5 hours. I feel absolutely no jetlag, but when I’m not in my comfy closet I don’t tend to sleep nearly as long as I do anywhere else, so I hope that won’t be too much of a problem.

My host family was shocked when I said I’d eat just about anything, and proceeded to put a few dishes in front of me, and were like “whoa” when I liked it. Hahaha :D – I guess they aren’t used to travellers who have had anything besides sushi. Wow… the sun rises early here. The sun’s been coming up over the horizon since 4:30 am.

Well anyway, time to get ready for my first day. I’ll post about it when I get the chance. I also wrote a long meaningless “post” in my notebook during the plane ride, so I might type all that up – so you can be envious of 12 hour plane rides?

Anyway, obviously because I have no internet (although I brought my database of Touhou lyric booklets with me) my lyric posting will be seriously limited – but you guys expected that right? I’ll still post when I can – this is a habit that’s hard to kick.

 Ameagari no Kibou
 Hope After the Rain
Music by Takahiro Yamada, Masafumi Gotoh
Words by Masafumi Gotoh

So that the falling rain
Wouldn’t wash away my sadness day by day
I wrapped it in soil and waited for it to bud,
My hope after the rain

In the rain, I reached someone’s soft tears
On a clear day, I saw a small dried up frog in the road
Chasing away beyond the grey I could see blue
This first sign now shines on me

Avoiding the tiles lining the road,
A small life showed its face, shining brilliantly

So that you kneeling
At the bottom of a crevice wouldn’t dry up one day
I wrapped you in soil and waited for you to bud,
Even when it wasn’t raining

In a lightly dyed indigo sky
Where sound will travel far
A travel chime rings out
Calling for me,
“You cried, you were angry, you holed up –
But that way you won’t move forward.”

Avoiding the tiles lining the road,
A small life showed its face, shining brilliantly

So that the falling rain
Wouldn’t wash away my sadness day by day
I’m here now swearing I’ll bud

After the long falling rain,
So this seed can silently show its face
I wrapped it in soil and waited for it to bud
My hope after the rain

Maigoinu to Ame no Beat – “A Stray Puppy and the Beat of the Rain” (Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei OP)

Long titles are Long.

This is the Opening Theme to Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei, which is the best show this season; incredibly and incomparably awesome. The English title is “The Tatami Galaxy”, though “galaxy” doesn’t really have much to do with it. If you’re a college student I’m sure you’ll love it all the more. A moderate failure (like me D:) all the more :D.

WATCH THIS SHOW [here]. Support it via Funimation Simulcast/Hulu, which is free, quite instantaneous, with a good translation. Even if you’re going to be downloading a sub later for archiving, make sure you support. ‘kay? ^_^

Notes:
“mold” ← I’m sure you know I’m not talking about the fungus… remember the saying “the everyday morning mold”?
“coelacanth” ← is a prehistoric, kind of but not quite extinct fish: [wiki-link]
I translated “合図” “sign/signal” as “telltale”, because that part in that line lent itself more to a descriptor/adjective than noun. The meaning overall stays the same.

It’s like the shadows are walking, avoiding the sunspots
While the sunlight shouts down the streets unending
As if cursing the windless afternoon; that sort of Saturday mold.

People conceal their faces under thick clouds, and
Keep sharpening the feelings they hold that have nowhere to go.
Even if they’re buried down streets with nothing in them, they’re still there even now.

I have nightmares of dolls in a lined up in a string of windows,
Or of being locked away hidden inside a warehouse,
There was nothing but dust to tear through, I couldn’t find it.
There was no one’s hand I could reach out and touch.

Our reality
May just keep repeating – But yes,
One day I’ll meet you
So with that day in mind – Let’s keep on going!

To that vague telltale beat of the rain, the scent of loneliness fills the night,
The rain swims sucked into our lungs, and deep, deep dives a coelacanth.

To that vague telltale beat of the rain, the voice of a thrown away puppy calling
Breaks through the trafficking footsteps and reaches all the way to me: “Someone notice me.”

Our reality
May just keep repeating – But yes,
One day I’ll meet you
So with that day in mind – Let’s keep on going!

At night on that street corner,
Where it’s still pouring, I’m sure that shivering puppy
Is smiling through its teeth
With that day in mind – Let’s keep on going!

Our reality
May just keep repeating – But yes,
One day I’ll meet you
So with that day in mind – Let’s keep on going!

Let’s keep on living!

Siren Lyrics –

This is my personal translation for the lyrics of the two consecutive songs on the Siren Single (by Asian Kung-fu Generation): “Siren” and “Siren#” respectively, which I believe are part of the same song, or rather two responses to two different people sending messages to each other, a man and a woman, sort of reflective of Heian poetry, and my translations reflect this. I can’t see into the minds of the people that originally wrote this, and no translations can be perfect, but so much for my disclaimers. I encourage you to listen to and purchase this songs if you find yourself able, they are beautiful.

Siren (Track 1 – 5:28)

your thin arm I seized
mayfly who floats by me
give me your beautiful wings

those moistened distant eyes
like evening fog, or a summer haze, shaking away you disappeared

this molten heart as it is now
this white impulse that will not cool is so painful
flying past that street alley, the unending call of your siren
open it up for me

although you can’t paint your thoughts of a thousand years from now
I only wish for to start with the things that will be carved in a minute from now

the remains of my molten heart as it is now
this unhealable wound, heal it for me, it’s so painful
flying past that street alley, the resounding call of your siren
open it up for me

Call out to prove your existance
Oh siren!

Siren (Track 2 – 6:16)

The thick fingers of your hands
with white wings that dance in the night
someday you’ll surely forget
for you have no need of me, surely

The light of the street reflected in your car window
sends over this image of me my tears blurring my shadow.
That I was born, that freedom, to that end
still not understanding I will disappear.

The light that seeks out and invades the darkness
This moment that will not disappear, impatience toward tomorrow
without reason or conclusion, this pain will not end

Find someone somehow,
those white wings that do not open
someday surely will collapse
and I will disappear, surely

The light of the street reflected in your car window
sends over this image of me my tears blurring my shadow.
That I met you, that freedom, to that end
still not understanding, the world will end.
