Sousei Providence

Sponsored by: SH

The title here is spitefully ironic, as “providence” generally refers to the protective care of God – “So this is all the care He gives.”

na mo shirenai, chiisa na mura.
murabito-tachi wa kami wo fukaku shin’kou shi. tsutsumashiku kurashiteita.

There once was a small village with no name,
Where the villagers all held a firm belief in God, and lived their lives modestly.
Among them was a particularly devout husband and wife, they say.
Loved by all, they lived in peace and harmony, sharing in a humble happiness together.

However, there was one respect in which they were misfortunate.
Long had they tried and failed to have a child together.

tsuma wa inoru otto mo inoru

The wife prayed to God —
The husband prayed to God —

kami yori, arata na inochi wo sazukarubeku.
soushite, youyaku. mura no dare mo ga futari wo shukufuku suru —- hazu datta

— O, might He give onto them a new life to bear!

Then at long last, everyone in the village rejoiced, for a child was born!
 So it should have been…

moshi mo zaiaku ni omosa ga aru no nara

If the gravity of sin could be felt as weight, then surely
Each child would be confused by the sudden burden upon their small bodies

kasanatta ubugoe wa ayamachi wo kuiite ka
kami ni yurusarenu futago to iu shukugou kin’ki no kora noroi no kora

Was the chorus of their birth cries in sorrow of this mistake?
For to be twins was a unforgivable sin in God’s eyes
—O children, how intolerable, how accursed you are!

My God…

juujika no omosa wakeatte seoi ikiteiku
kitto futari nara
demo towa ni orosu koto wa dekinai no desu ka? My God…

They shall carry the weight of their cross together
Surely together, they may find a way…
But must they truly be doomed to shoulder this burden forever? My God…

yatto sazukatta kami no okurimono ni arumajiki keitai.
sore demo to fuufu wa hisshi ni kon’gan’ suru.
futari ga kono mura ni —- kono sekai ni ukeirerareru you ni to

The gift from God they had so longed for came to them in a form that must not be.
 Even so, the couple pleaded:
May these two children be accepted in this village — may they be accepted by the world.

ibutsu kaibutsu to ushiro-yubisasareta
subete ga byoudou saredo keiken’sa dake ga fusoroi —- kami to no kyori

Behind their backs, they were called irregularities — monsters
In all aspects but one they were identical, only their piety — their distance to God
 was not uniform.

futsuu nara sashite muzukashiku nai hazu no negai
chiisaku hakanai
nee, kanau no nara futari dake de ikiru kibou wo
aa lydia
rifle ni mo
kodoku ni yami ni torawarenu you ni
kami no go-jihi ga furisosogu you ni
omoi wa seou tsumi yori omoku natteita

In normal circumstance, it would not be too much to hope for the realization of
 —this faint and modest wish:
Please Lord, if you would, give them the hope to live on alone together
To Lydia
 —and to Rifle as well
May they be not prisoners to the darkness of isolation!
Lord, may you shower them with your mercy!
Their love outweighed even the sin the twins bore

kyou mo mata, ane no lydia wa rifle ni kami no son’zai wo toku

Yet again, Lydia, the elder twin, preaches to Rifle one day about the existence of God.

ii, rifle? kamisama wa iru no desu. anata mo sore wo shin’jinasai.

Rifle, are you listening? God is with us. You must have faith and believe.
If you do, no longer will you have to be lonely, and no longer will others hate you.

……jitsu wa ne. watashi, itsuka kono mura wo deyou to omou.

Lydia… I’ve been thinking. One day, I want to leave this village.
And I was wondering if… if you might come with me, when that time comes…

futari de, ikiteiku koto ga dekiru nara
nee, asu no koto sae wakaranai kedo
tatta hitotsu no yakusoku ni musuu no negai omoi wo takushite
tomo ni ikiteikou to te no hira wo kasaneta

“I don’t know if we will be able to live on our own…”
“I don’t even know what tomorrow will bring, but…”
Entrusting countless hopes and dreams and love into this single wish,
Rifle placed her hand on her sister’s. “Will you come away with me?”

arayuru ken’ri wo motezu keredo kitto futari ni mo
douka sukui wo demo……
yume wo idaku ken’ri kurai wa ataerarete—- sou deshou?
chiisa na nozomi—-

Neither had any rights to speak of, yet even so…
—May salvation find them —and yet even
Shouldn’t they at least have the right — to dream?
 —this modest hope…

imouto kara omoigakenai sasoi no kotoba.
sore ni hakkiri to kotaezu ni, soredemo ane wa tsutsumikomu you ni yasashiku…… yakusoku wo shita

This invitation from her sister caught Lydia off guard.
Unable to flatly refuse, she gently — as in a warm embrace, promised her sister this:

……rifle, daijoubu. itsu made mo…… zutto, issho yo.

Rifle… Don’t worry. I will always be with you… forever.

    minor typo in this line:

    Voices:

    below is the correct character

    good work, as always.

    • Thanks, for catching that, I made the same mistake on the first song too, but caught it before I posted it…
