紅蓮の弓矢 // Guren no Yumiya (進撃の巨人/Shingeki no Kyojin/”Attack on Titan” OP)

For fun. (Literally because I couldn’t sleep.)
I love the last two stanzas – especially the second to last one.

If anyone knows what the German stuff in the middle is, please let me know.

A transcription and translation of the German bridge has been suggested – It’s in the comments!

Notes:
唯の幻影 = “just an illusion” – I chose “grasping at straws” based almost exclusively on tone and context – about the same meaning overall. “What you’re doing is crazy, you’re a fool to think you can win.”

They are the prey, and we are the hunters!

Fire-red Bow and Arrow!

fumareta hana no namae mo shirazu ni

Not knowing the names of the flowers trampled about it
A bird alights, waiting in vain for the wind to come

Prayer will solve nothing!
Only the will to fight can change the present!

shikabane fumikoete susumu ishi wo warau buta yo
kachiku no an’nei kyogi no han’ei shiseru garou no jiyuu wo!

You pigs that laugh at our determination to walk past our comrades’ corpses!
You, laughing at our “peace” of livestock, our false “prosperity”,
at all our “freedom”, ours no more than wolves starved to death!

jouheki no sono kanata emono wo hofuru jäger
hotobashiru shoudou ni sono mi wo yakinagara
tasogare ni hi wo ugatsu guren’ no yumiya

This shame of confinement is the warning shot to our rebellion!
Far from the walls of the castle a hunter slaughters his prey
As he lets his body burn in his surging impulse to kill,
His crimson arrow rips through the twilight sun

ya wo tsugae oikakeru yatsu wa nigasanai

I ready my arrow in pursuit, I won’t let him get away!
I shoot my arrow, catching up, he’s not getting away!

My bowstring stretched to its limit, to its breaking point,
I’ll shoot ’til he breathes his last, as many times as it takes!

emono wo korosu no wa

togisumasareta omae jishin’ no satsui da

What kills prey is
Neither weaponry nor skill
But your finely sharpened intent to kill

We are the hunters! As hot as flame!
We are the hunters! As cold as ice!
We are the hunters! Put your soul into that arrow!
We are the hunters! Pierce through and conquer them all!

A fool’s errand! Grasping at straws! But this reckless courage,
Is an avant garde to freedom, an offensive gamble!
Let victory come to us running slaves!!

ubawareta sono chihei sekai wo nozomu Eren
tomedo naki shoudou ni sono mi wo okasarenagara
yoiyami ni shi wo hakobu meifu no yumiya

The irrationality we’re burdened with is the warning shot to our charge!
There he, Eren, looks to the horizon stolen from us, to a free world
As he lets himself be overrun by an unstoppable impulse to kill,
His hellish arrow carries death into the twilight

  1. The German part at the beginning is slightly wrong. In this case, “Sie sind das Essen” means “they are the prey” and not “you”. (Though literally it means “They are the food” but that would sound a little weird, right?)

“Sie sind” can have two meanings:

    1. “You are”, with “you” as a polite personal pronoun. Like “vous” in French. That’s why “you” doesn’t quite fit here. Addresing someone politely in this context would be a bit awkward.

    2. It can mean “they are”.

    I think it’s clear that 1. doesn’t seem appropriate, right? ;)

    Hope I helped a little. (^_^)

Have you seen the WataMote OP?

The spoken German in the middle sounds like this to me:
    Angriff auf die Titanen.
Der Junge von einst wird bald zum Schwert greifen.
Wer nur seine Machtlosigkeit beklagt, kann nichts verändern.
Der Junge von einst wird bald das schwarze Schwert ergreifen.
Hass und Zorn sind eine zweischeidige Klinge.
Bald, eines Tages wird er dem Schicksal die Zähne zeigen.

Which would roughly translate to something like:
    Attack on the titans.
The boy of yore will soon take up the sword.
Those who only bemoan their powerlessness can change nothing.
The boy of yore will soon grasp the black sword.
Hate and fure are a double-edged blade.
Soon, one day he will bare his teeth to destiny.

I think the opening is actually:
    “Seid ihr das Essen?
    Nein, wir sind die Jäger!”

    Are you the food?
    No, we are the hunters!

Which makes more sense, considering the premise of the show.

    • I -think- I got the first line off of the booklet, but that certainly does make a lot of sense.

I’ve seen both versions, all over the internet. Revo doesn’t exactly enunciate his ‘German’ clearly, so it’s quite tricky to tell from the sound alone.
I’d be interested to know which is in the booklet!

I just listened to the intro about 20 times in a row, it really sounds like he’s singing “Seid ihr das essen”, it’s the nein/und that’s unclear. For all I know, he could have been going for:

“Seid ihr das essen, und wir sind die Jäger?”
which would *very roughly* translate as
“Are you the food, and we the hunters?”
        which would be appropriate too.
