雨はりらりら // Ame wa Rirarira

Requested by: johncoreyturner, oskuro, (and others)

Better late than never!

Anticipating RTS 10 is still in progress. The link will stay on the right side bar until the next anticipating post goes up (C84) so remember that it’s easy to find!

Notes:

Yes, もみじ comes from a verb (もみづ/もみつ)

Fragrant olive is a type of Asian olive tree/shrub that blooms in the late summer and fall with flowers ranging from white to bright orange (most commonly referenced with 金木犀). It bears fruit in the spring. – It’s a weird paradox for the song, because もみつ is used to describe trees’ leaves turning yellow, orange, and red, but the fragrant olive tree is an evergreen, so the only thing turning orange is its flowers. Still, it fits in perfectly with the image of autumn.

べっこう/鼈甲 “bekkou” means “tortoise shell”, but it also represents the color “amber”, which I believe it’s referring to more here.

“The fallen fruits of the wind” – fruit and nuts (“tree fruit” in Japanese) and so forth.

The way I interpret the “forget forget” stanzas is “by forgetting everything else, you better remember what’s most important.”

Yamazaki Sayaka completely lost me on that “tea dummy” line. (Though it probably has something to do with fragrant olive trees, also known as tea olive trees…)

ねえもみつきんもくせい 染まるもの見上げたら
その上にある空 色をゆるめて
昼下がり金色 落ちてきた風の実が

sono ue ni aru sora iro wo yurumete
hirusagari kin’iro ochitekita kaze no mi ga

Look up at the fragrant olive trees blossoming orange
The sky above, relaxing its color
As fallen fruits of the wind gently touch those
Afternoon tones of gold, everything is a sea of amber

Ri-ra-ra-ra, the rain ri-ra ri-ra, and waves ra-ra : Ri-ra ri-ra-ra-ra farewell
Rustling farewell, on such a wonderful day as this : I can cry tears of rain

If only the fragrant olive trees would keep from blossoming
If only I could wait in those days until the harvest
As fallen fruits of the wind gently touch those
Afternoon tones of gold, everything is a sea of amber

Things that will never, never ever disappear

Even if I plucked the fragrant olive blossoms, nothing would change
In the sky relaxing its color, sheep play
A fallen tea dummy, tries to shake those
Afternoon tones of gold, and make them spill over

  1. OMG YESYESYESYESYESYES i think I love you Kafka thank you so much for translating this song I LOVE SAKAUE NACHI!

also if you don’t mind, could you tell me what “雲がくれにし夜半の月かな” (the first song of Mágico Catástrofe) means? something about “I Wonder ” and the clouds and the moon (or month?) in the middle of the night…

    • 雲がくれにし夜半の月かな “kumogakurenishi yowa no tsuki kana”

“Ah, the midnight moon hidden behind the clouds”

It’s written in classical form which turns a lot of particles like かな upside down. ^^
