譲り葉塚 // Yuzurihadzuka

Commissioned by: Kanin

Note:
Yuzuriha or “Daphniphyllum Macropodum”/”False Daphne” (?) is a shrub/small-tree that is distinctly male or female.

誰そ彼 means literally “who is that over there?” but has long been a poetic word for twilight, but I’m mentioning it here because “I stand alone as twilight deepens” carries also the image of someone looking out in the distance (for someone else).

“A promise we could not hold together…” literally “a promise in which we could not lock/tangle our pinky fingers” – without the context I might assume it meant a promise that could not be made in public, but most of the vocabulary points to the narrator being already married to the one she loves.

The character 逝 (used in the last line’s “go”) is used most often (but not exclusively) when referring to “death”.

Possibly unrelated but the 譲り “Yuzuri” part of 譲り葉 “Yuzuriha” means “to surrender or give up (something)”. “Yuzuriha” may also be written 楪.

譲り葉塚
 Yuzurihadzuka
 Mound of Yuzuriha
唄:霜月はるか
作・編曲:MANYO
作詞:日山 尚

ひとり佇む 誰そ彼
小指絡ませぬ ゆびきり
明日も来るから
ここに居りなさい

hitori tatazumu tasogare
koyubi karamasenu yubikiri
ashita mo kuru kara
koko ni orinasai

I stand alone as twilight deepens
A promise we could not hold together…
I’ll come tomorrow as well
So please, be here.

心ぼそき閨の中でも
灯りとなる その言葉
髪撫づる 痩せた手と手を
繋ぎ歩む 双りの砂利道
今も あの日は褪せずに

kokorobosoki neya no naka demo
akari to naru sono kotoba
kamoji nadzuru yaseta te to te wo
tsunagi ayumu futari no jarimichi
ima mo ano hi wa asezu ni

Even in this dark and lonely bedroom
Your words become a light
Your slender hand that would stroke my hair,
In mine as we walked together down a gravel path –
Even now I remember those days as if they were yesterday

格子隔てて散る花
骨に纏わりし蝶々も
はやくお帰りと
舞ひて ささめきて

koushi hedatete chiru hana
hone ni matowarishi chouchou mo
hayaku okaeri to
maite sasamekite

Flowers scatter beyond the window
Even the butterflies at its grating
Dance whispering,
Quickly, come home

刻の過ぎる故里に住む
恋慕える あの人は
嗚呼 偏に別人のよう
知らぬ人に
知りえぬ笑みなど見せて
世界を違える

toki no sugiru furusato ni sumu
koi shitaeru ano hito wa
aa hitoe ni betsubito no you
shiranu hito ni
shirienu emi nado misete
sekai wo tagaeru

As I live here in my home as time passes by
You whom I love so dearly
Ah, it seems is in love with another
Showing another I don’t know
Smiles that I could never know
Overturning my world

便り絶える閨の中でも
また良い子に眠ります
だから 呼んで 名前だけでも
忘れぬこと それだけの願い
今は 儚く醜く

tayoritaeru neya no naka demo
mata yoi ko ni nemurimasu
dakara yon’de namae dake demo
wasurenu koto sore dake no negai
ima wa hakanaku minikuku

Though I hear nothing of you, in our bedroom
Like a good child I will sleep
So please, call just even my name
All I wish is that you will not forget me
Everything now feels hopeless and ugly

土に汚れ 塚は荒れ果て
枯れた草に寄る命
天へ昇る糸を切りしは
居場所もなき泡沫のならい
枝を落ちゆく譲り葉
いざや 何処へ逝こうか……

tsuchi ni yogore tsuka wa arehate
kareta kusa ni yoru inochi
sora e noboru ito wo kirishi wa
ibasho mo naki utakata no narai
eda wo ochiyuku yuzuriha
iza ya izuko e yukou ka…….

Covered in dirt, the mound is barren
Life clinging to withered grass
Cutting the thread that climbs into the heavens
Is just another fleeting act of one with no place to go
The yuzuriha’s branch falls –
Now where will I go……?

Yuzuriha-2 (charmal)

  1. Whoa, this was fast. Knowing nearly all songs by this lyricist, I absolutely love how you’ve captured the essence of her lyrics… It’s a bit hard to explain, but it’s as if I was still reading in Japanese, and that’s the best thing I can say about a translation. Thanks a lot.
