Kouya no Mokushiroku

Christmas is coming up, so – that’s right! It’s Flandre Season! Remember not to shake your Flandre too much or you might end up with broken lights and ornaments on your floor – and those hurt to step on!

Also, congratulations on Flandre for making it through the first bracket of seimoe – even if seeing Akyuu putting up a fight made me vote for her, I really did want Flandre to win. I mean she’s so mutable – it’s easy to make her cute, cool, scary, sexy, comical, perverted, royal, clumsy – you name it XD

Anyway, sorry about the lateness of this one, I was planning to have it out around the same time as Native Sage, but I’ve had to study, my car broke down, and my earphones fried. D:

Hopefully I’ll be getting my earphones sometime today though. (I can’t get used to these headphones.. D:<

Notes:
Are twin gods who record all of humans’ good and evil deeds respectively to give to Enma (or Shikieiki if you’re thinking Touhou) in that human’s final judgment. The male on the left shoulder records all good deeds, the female on the right records all bad deeds.

“laughing over this capricious world” – ‘trivial’ would work too, but I thought that was putting it too simply. “world of vicissitudes” which is more of a direct translation I think would have given the wrong impression. Flandre or what have you is looking down on the world, which ages much faster than her, changes back and forth much faster than her, in what would seem to be irresponsible, fickle, unimportant, capricious behavior. I was very close to using ‘fickle’ and it probably has a little bit of a better ring, but that felt like it was putting too much emphasis on affection/love or whatever (what fickle’s more often used for) – I think capricious also captures the feeling of the world changing and effecting people’s worries and troubles as well. We are troubled for having to deal with a capricious world – a world that decides to let my car die right before I have to drive 1000 or so miles in a weekend. (and is going to cost me ~$500+)

“What was released that night was… …. What apocalyptic fangs!” – synecdoche – and yes that actually forms a sentence. A “don’t try this in your English class” sentence.

“This night awakens a devil ripping, tearing in her punishments insane” → so I was imagining someone’s skin being torn off their body – what about you?

“Scattering as they should” – ‘scattering’ can be more like ‘disappating’. Like ceasing. Like everyone has been screaming and yelling and running around and then they see Flandre smile at them and lose it – they go silent, fear stricken to their features and so forth. – However, it can also mean people start screaming instead of stop, the screams not disappating but radiating, so to speak. Either image works so I stuck with “scattering”.

“innocent hand” – you can either take this as she doesn’t really comprehend death, that it’s all very silly that everyone’s screaming etc – or you can take it as no ill-will, killing for no reason in particular.

“Rotting as she grew” – this actually makes a metaphor that I found hard to transfer over – at one point she twisted, and her, a seed (metaphor), was grown/raised, rotting as she was. Flandre’s christmas light wings sort of look like branches, rotting branches, fake (or real I guess) fruit… anyway.

“異の血” – i no chi – “strange blood” is pronounced the same as 命 (life), and I can’t possibly help but think it’s a pun. – also “Where are they all going?” as in where are they all going away/disappearing off to?

“Slicing into the able-bodied / Biting off reincarnation” the subject of these two phrases is unclear. I wrote it as if suggesting that the subject were Flandre. ie, her cursed fingers sliced into the able-bodied and she (or I guess her fingers) bit off reincarnation. However you interpret the lines as saying “Those who prayed to hell, which is a -place- that slices into the able-bodied and bites off reincarnation, or you can interpret the subject as the Soha-deva, “slicing into the able-bodied, biting reincarnation (you can even consider those actions by proxy (Flandre))” But I’ve listed these possibilities from most likely to least likely.

Just the fact that the Soha-deva come up is a little odd, but if this is Apocalypse, you could say that those two that judge all human actions that there was enough evil to deem proper releasing Flandre on the world. Etc.

Sorry about all the notes, I think I went note crazy on this one.

Kouya no Mokushiroku
Apocalypse of Crimson Night
Lyrics: Blue E
Arrangement: 8STYLE
Circle: SOUND HOLIC
Album: Metallic Vampire
Event: M3-28

akaki tsuki wo se ni
rinka no gotoku
tokihanatareshi wa
ashiki hohoemi
rashutsu sareshi saga
yuetsu ni uete
ruten no yo warau
mokushi no kiba yo

With a crimson moon at her back
Like a phosphorus flame
What was released that night was…
With an evil smile
Her true nature laid bare
Starving for ecstasy
Laughing over this capricious world
What apocalyptic fangs!

imashime hikichigiri kurueru akuma no mezameru yoru
kanashimi kaerimizu namida fuminijiru dake
nogareru sube no nai aware na inochi no furueru kage
sono me ni nani yori mo okashiku utsuru no darou

This night awakens a devil, ripping, tearing in her punishments insane
She turns not to others’ sorrow, but tramples on their tears
As she watches their pitiful lives’ shadows shivering, no means to escape
Surely there is nothing in her eyes more than amusement

mu ni hibiku uta ga
odoru yamiyo ni
harisakeshi kokoro
kazasu tawamure
ikenie no nageki
subekaraku chiru
rukoku seshi osore
terasu zankoku

Her song ringing in the waste
Through the dancing darkness
Raises a heart ripped apart
As if it all were a game
The cries of the sacrifices
Scattering as they should
With sheer cruelty shining upon
The fear carved into their bodies

chikara ni miserareta osanaki akuma no habataku yoru
akaku somaru sora ni kirisaku sakebi ga chiru
obieru tamashii wo mujaki na tenohira ga moteasobu

This night a childish devil enchanted with power beats her wings
The screams which split the mist in the crimson stained sky scatter
And in the palm of her innocent hand she plays with frightened souls
Beautifully, pitifully, she closes her grip to make flowers blossom

yami ni tojikomerare itsushika yume wa hizanda
kuchite tane ga sodachi ozomashii hane wo hiraku

Shut away in the darkness, at some point she twisted
Rotting as she grew, spreading her repulsive wings

i no chi yadosu mi wa
doko e kieyuku
norowashiki yubi ga
nozomu tawamure
yuui no mi wo kizami
rinne kamikiru
yomi ni inorishi wa
kushou no kami yo

“These bodies that hold such strange blood,
Where are they all going?”
She reaches out with her cursed fingers
As if it were all a game
Slicing into the able-bodied
Biting off reincarnation
Those that prayed to hell
Are the Soha-deva

Flandre month, best month of the year~
    ——

If it’s not too much trouble, I was wondering if I could leave a request in the future?

    Song: IRON RAIN~
    Group: Yuuhei Sattelite

    • I’ll give it a look in a little while – the list’s getting a bit long so I think I’ll freeze it again soon (like I did a few months back) but I’ll probably slip you in at the end even if I do. ^^

  2. Just wanted to say thanks for this one :)
i love your translations, i do wonder what its like reading lyrics like these in japanese rather than through a translation, does it take on a different meaning when reading it in japanese?

i hope to learn myself someday but i cant even remeber 30 hirigana at the moment ><

    so yeah thanks!

    • Yeah, reading the lyrics in Japanese is a whole different experience; I try the best I can to get a similar feel, close meaning, and similar structure – but it’s especially easy for the structure to break down and to keep the same level of ambiguity where it comes up (because English demands more clarity) – and some lyrics (especially those by RD) are just written so beautifully and cleverly it’s all I can do to come close.

But hiragana (/katakana) is the first step! Just try to write them all once or twice each day until you get it (surprisingly it doesn’t take very long if you do that and look at them often) – then you can get a large kanji book (that has 2000-2500) and just study the first 20-100 (I think the JLPT N5 only requires that you know 20 or so (or was it 120?)), then when you’re comfortable with that, the next set, etc. etc. :D

Another good way to study in general until you have a class is to look for N5,N4,N3 study materials online. :D

  3. by any chance do you have the mp3 version of this song?

    • I don’t really provide that sort of stuff here – but I’m sure R8-Audio or Audio-4U or someone’ll still have it available.
