紅涙にしづむは供人の憂い // Kourui ni Shidzumu wa Tomobito no Urei

One of my favorite songs on this CD. It reminds me a little bit of アナタガモトメルモノ from Kiseki☆Impulse, at least in the way it’s balanced, like, partition-wise. Also, we hardly get a chance to hear an arrangement of Ran’s theme – and I hardly get a chance to use pictures of Ran so :D

This is another note heavy piece, but more from me just going “ooh, that’s interesting!” all over the place.

Notes:
紅涙 “Kourui” are crimson tears, or bloody tears, or bitter “feminine tears” apparently, but I just went with the obvious direct translation.

“The sixth hour of evening”/”late hour of the dog” – this song uses the archaic hour system. 暮れ六つ is “mid-evening” 戌の刻 is “late-evening”. but in the case of “the sixth hour” it corresponds pretty closely to the 12 hour clock, so 6pm isn’t wrong (depending on your latitude :P). But anyway, in addition to having zodiac coordinations with hours of the day, there’s also a number system that starts at 9 and counts down to 4, then jumps back to 9. It goes 9, 9.5, 8, 8.5, 7 etc. “The fourth hour” is usually about 10pm, however the song’s lyrics uses “the prostitute’s fourth hour” or the “drawn fourth hour” which actually is midnight. Confusing? yes. Interesting? Well at least it is lot for me. Anyway, it’s when the shop-window prostitutes were relieved of their duties if they hadn’t brought in a customer yet.

‘lycori’ (plural)=lycoris radiata, slightly more common name: red spider lily, or cluster amaryllis

かわたれまで=彼は誰まで has the same roots as たそがれ (黄昏==誰彼) meaning literally, when those from afar appear unclear (as night falls).

“scrape against the sound of every springing footstep” – the word I would have normally used for the word is “graze” but that would have sort of broken the mood and it sounds too close to “grate” so… also, “footstep” is the sound of clacking shoes in this case. The image that I get anyway (along with a few other suggestions in other lines) is that she’s dancing, in part to pass the time, or in part to forget, otherwise I’m not quite sure what to make of the leaping/bounding/springing steps.

I wish I was magical enough to fully understand that third stanza.

A thread made of lotuses is said to lead the way to paradise, or something like that – I’m not really surprised.

Anyway, as you can probably tell from the end result, a lot of the stanzas go phantasmagorical where nothing is really all that clear – it’s a series of images actions, causality’s not really defined all that well, background isn’t defined all that well… It’s as if you were to jump into someone elses head, who was thinking about something, someone you didn’t know… filling in all the blanks is hard if you don’t have any realy clues XD.

紅夜の黙示録 // Kouya no Mokushiroku

Christmas is coming up, so – that’s right! It’s Flandre Season! Remember not to shake your Flandre too much or you might end up with broken lights and ornaments on your floor – and those hurt to step on!

Also, congratulations on Flandre for making it through the first bracket of seimoe – even if seeing Akyuu putting up a fight made me vote for her, I really did want Flandre to win. I mean she’s so mutable – it’s easy to make her cute, cool, scary, sexy, comical, perverted, royal, clumsy – you name it XD

Anyway, sorry about the lateness of this one, I was planning to have it out around the same time as Native Sage, but I’ve had to study, my car broke down, and my earphones fried. D:

Hopefully I’ll be getting my earphones sometime today though. (I can’t get used to these headphones.. D:<

Notes:
倶生の神よ (soha-deva). Are twin gods who record all of humans’ good and evil deeds respectively to give to Enma (or Shikieiki if you’re thinking Touhou) in that human’s final judgment. The male on the left shoulder records all good deeds, the female on the right records all bad deeds.

“laughing over this capricious world” – ‘trivial’ would work too, but I thought that was putting it too simply. “world of vicissitudes” which is more of a direct translation I think would have given the wrong impression. Flandre or what have you is looking down on the world, which ages much faster than her, changes back and forth much faster than her, in what would seem to be irresponsible, fickle, unimportant, capricious behavior. I was very close to using ‘fickle’ and it probably has a little bit of a better ring, but that felt like it was putting too much emphasis on affection/love or whatever (what fickle’s more often used for) – I think capricious also captures the feeling of the world changing and effecting people’s worries and troubles as well. We are troubled for having to deal with a capricious world – a world that decides to let my car die right before I have to drive 1000 or so miles in a weekend. (and is going to cost me ~$500+)

“What was released that night was… …. What apocalyptic fangs!” – synecdoche – and yes that actually forms a sentence. A “don’t try this in your English class” sentence.

“This night awakens a devil ripping, tearing in her punishments insane” → so I was imagining someone’s skin being torn off their body – what about you?

“Scattering as they should” – ‘scattering’ can be more like ‘disappating’. Like ceasing. Like everyone has been screaming and yelling and running around and then they see Flandre smile at them and lose it – they go silent, fear stricken to their features and so forth. – However, it can also mean people start screaming instead of stop, the screams not disappating but radiating, so to speak. Either image works so I stuck with “scattering”.

“innocent hand” – you can either take this as she doesn’t really comprehend death, that it’s all very silly that everyone’s screaming etc – or you can take it as no ill-will, killing for no reason in particular.

“Rotting as she grew” – this actually makes a metaphor that I found hard to transfer over – at one point she twisted, and her, a seed (metaphor), was grown/raised, rotting as she was. Flandre’s christmas light wings sort of look like branches, rotting branches, fake (or real I guess) fruit… anyway.

“異の血” – i no chi – “strange blood” is pronounced the same as 命 (life), and I can’t possibly help but think it’s a pun. – also “Where are they all going?” as in where are they all going away/disappearing off to?

“Slicing into the able-bodied / Biting off reincarnation” the subject of these two phrases is unclear. I wrote it as if suggesting that the subject were Flandre. ie, her cursed fingers sliced into the able-bodied and she (or I guess her fingers) bit off reincarnation. However you interpret the lines as saying “Those who prayed to hell, which is a -place- that slices into the able-bodied and bites off reincarnation, or you can interpret the subject as the Soha-deva, “slicing into the able-bodied, biting reincarnation (you can even consider those actions by proxy (Flandre))” But I’ve listed these possibilities from most likely to least likely.

Just the fact that the Soha-deva come up is a little odd, but if this is Apocalypse, you could say that those two that judge all human actions that there was enough evil to deem proper releasing Flandre on the world. Etc.

Sorry about all the notes, I think I went note crazy on this one.

^The many faces of Flandre

^Did you know patchouli was a fragrance? (Well if you want to be technical it’s a plant) I found this out when I went to Japan. o.o; Like you can get patchouli incense sticks.

Congratulations, Patchouli, even if you had to beat Renko to do it, for getting to the second round of Seimoe. (if you have no idea what I’m talking about, see here: [link])

Sorry for the sudden shutdown of posting, I’ve been having a lot of problems with my headphones, and finally they croaked, so to speak. I already bought new ones and they’re on their way; thank you for those who offered to gift me some for Christmas, but I can’t wait that long :3

I have that Flandre song from this album on my list to translate soon too – I just have a personal love for ヴワル魔法図書館 – I probably love it more than locked girl, actually.

So I spent time transcribing a grimoire to prepare myself for this song. wwww (no really.)

This song is really cool – and sort of parable-ic. Especially the end, when Patchy sort of becomes the sun.

Notes:
This word: 堆く for some reason refused to be recognized by my linux computer’s IME. I tried editing the main dictionaries by hand to add it in and it wouldn’t work, used updater tools and etc, but modified-anthy works differently than anthy and it just wouldn’t let me add it into the system. *sigh* Oh well. – I’ll just have to use the alternate method, radical → kanji builder to words that won’t build well and don’t have any alternate words to pull from.

“All I close” – alright so it sounds a little awkward. The first line in the song feels sort of like it’s refuting the phrase “Locked Girl”, it’s as if to say “Locked Girl? No. I have only closed myself – of my own accord – behind these walls of knowledge as a fortress, not a prison.”

“As I recite ciphered magic” → it’s more like “I recite (from a book) (understanding [something that requires some sort of mental capacity or ability to understand] as I’m reading) magic” – ie. it doesn’t have to be a cipher, but a lot of grimoires were written in ciphers or codes and what have you, in addition to being intentionally difficult to understand so… *throws hands up in the air*

the ” – yet” s are more for flow than anything else :x

Happy Thanksgiving!
Be sure to eat lots of red stuff, like cranberries, cranberry pie, cranberry sauce, cranberry juice…

This song is probably my second favorite on the album, and while I may like “my sweet Vampress” more, this song is definitely the climax, and why not? There’s a reason 亡き王女の為のセプテット (Remilia’s Theme) consistently takes #1 or #2 in popularity polls for best original Touhou theme.

Notes:
Unfortunately I have no idea what the latin chanting is saying.
There are a lot of alternate readings in this song – many of them are the same like “symphony” but a lot of other ones have dual meanings, “reality” being more like “dream fantasy reality”.

Because of the structure of the first stanza (at least) I’ve decided to use classical English cases/pronouns. (I did a little research to make sure I was doing it right ^^;) Because you can see the first stanza as an introduction, I decided to keep the classic (early-modern) English there and go normal for the rest of it.

First stanza in non-fancy English:
O lamb, that which gives its dripping life
Relax your body and close your eyes
And I will give you peace…
^because of how “O ***” structures work, it’s easier to use the “older” pronouns, otherwise you have to shift it to third person ^^; Because it’s not like we use “O …” in modern English anyway, it’s more like “Hey YOU!” :P

“Excites my love” – alright it sounds a little weird I know, but I didn’t want to leave it at “excites me” because that would send too much of the wrong message. Think that hearing the voice (moan XD) brings a smile to the narrator’s (Remilia’s) face and makes her think, “Oh, how cute, how lovely are you.” (even if you want to attribute that to irony or sadism or what have you).

You can sort of interchange crimson with scarlet in the lyrics if you’d like. The word 紅 usually refers more to crimson (darker – like the font color I’m using) than to scarlet (brighter) but both crimson and scarlet fall under what I consider “deep red”. 朱 is more commonly used for “scarlet” but it’s actually more along the lines of “vermillion”. [Dark/Bluish]Crimson-Red-Scarlet-Vermillion[Bright/Orangish] If you want to get super technical you can look up “Red” on wikipedia or look at the cover of REDALiCE’s RED which has almost every shade of red with it’s Japanese counterpart XD.

^If it wouldn’t have made the line way too long I would have written “the sky above, the universe beyond”, as “sora” is written as “宇宙” or “universe”.

“Reality isn’t that easy; I don’t want to have to swallow all this down” ← think castor oil.
Also, the adjective used for “easy” is the same as the adjective used for “sweet” so the meaning parallels on itself, “it’s not sweet, so I don’t want to swallow it”, but also “it’s not so easy as to leave possible any clear solutions, but I don’t want to accept that they’re none”. Maybe I should have gone for “sweet” but I felt like tying it to the previous stanza more with “easy” :3
