Yuukyuu no Komoriuta

Requested by: HKJ, Haruka, Me

I’ve said this before right? Translating RD’s songs is an experience. I often cry ;-;

Notes:
The first stanza is taken from the first verse of an old lullaby, 江戸子守唄, with “young boy” changed to “you” (because she’s singing a little girl to sleep :3) I’m not sure if you got that vibe, but it uses baby-words.

I made a few “assumptions” to connect phrases, and keep what is lovely in Japanese not so repetitive in English.

“Once a flower blossoms
It is able to fly through the skies”

Think cherry blossoms, and we musn’t forget Reimu’s special ability (once she stops relying on Genji) “to fly through the sky”.

I couldn’t catch all the background whispery singing in the background, but a lot of it is adverbs, motions and images and stuff (at least what I hear) so… just think of it as part of the instrumental.

I took a bit of liberty with this line: “Your sleeping face / Is of one looking beyond the horizon…” but the adverb/adjective is a tari-adj and is basically “endlessly expansive as far as the eye can see” – you could take it as if that is what it looks like she’s dreaming of, or you could take it as a representation of the vast possibilities the mother sees in the face of her daughter. I went with the former because it sort of carries over the latter, subtly.

nen’-ne n’ korori yo, o-korori yo.
nen’-ne n’ korori yo, o-korori yo.

Sleep, Sleep, My sweet child.
Sleep, Sleep, My sweet child.

nen’-ne n’ korori yo, o-korori yo.
anta wa yoigo da, nen’-ne shi na.

Sleep, Sleep, My sweet child.
You’re such a good girl, Now it’s time to sleep.

temari fuusen taiko no ne
shimai ni monogatari hitotsu kikasete

Let’s put away your bells and balls, balloons and drums
And I’ll tell you a story…

nen’-ne n’ korori yo, o-korori yo.
anta wa yoigo da, nen’-ne shi na.

Sleep, Sleep, My sweet child.
You’re such a good girl, Now it’s time to sleep.

-amata no hito to ayakashi to
chigau sekai wo ikiteyuku sadame wo

-Of a fate to live in a separate world
Apart from the multitudes of human and spirits

-suki mo sezu sukaremo sezu ni
hitori ayumitsudzukeru yakume wo ou

-Neither to love or be loved
Walking alone in one’s duty

ikutsu mo no kisetsu wo koete
tadoru yuukyuu no toki
arubeki mono no tame ni

Passing the seasons
Until reaching eternity
For the sake of what must be…

sore demo ima wa,
tada ima wa,
saa-sa,
nemure.

But now,
Just now,
That’s right,
Sleep, my child.

eien no utagoe
nani mo mada shiranu hitomi yo
shizuka ni nemure to
mimamoru sugata

And there was eternity in that voice
Softly singing to sleep
Closed eyes that yet knew nothing
As mother watched over child

tojita sekai no wa
tagurinagara
tsuyoku are to
negau sugata

And there was as the world closed
One mother drawing in its ring
Wishing strongly for
Her child’s future

nen’-ne n’ korori yo, o-korori yo.
anta wa yoigo da, nen’-ne shi na.

Sleep, Sleep, My sweet child.
You’re such a good girl, Now it’s time to sleep.

hana no saku koro ni wa
sora wo kakeru you ni naru

Once a flower blossoms
It is able to fly through the skies

yoru ga fukaku naru mae ni
yoru ni makenu sube wo eru

Before the night grows too dark
You’ll obtain what skills you’ll need not to lose to it

…soshite itsu no hi ka
“eien” wo sono te ni nigire.

…And then one day
You’ll grasp in your hands, “eternity”.

kono na wo tsugu imi
mada nani mo shiranu hitomi yo
yasuraka ni nemure
madowanu you ni

Your eyes still have not seen
What it means to be heir to our name
But sleep peacefully my child
Be not troubled

haruka na kioku ni
yume wo miru ka
sono negao wa
bouyou taredo

I wonder if you’re
Dreaming, in distant memories?
Your sleeping face
Is of one looking beyond the horizon…

sono se wo oikake
tada tsuyoku sadate to
negau wa haha naru mono no tsutome ka

I suppose it’s just a mother’s task
To chase after her child and
Raise her to be strong…

itsu ka wa tadoru
onaji michi wo
tsuraku mo kurushii
kodoku no michi wo

One day you’ll reach
The same road as I
Harsh and painful
Filled with loneliness

dakara, ima wa.
semete, ima wa.

So, now.
At least, now.

kono ude no naka,
-tada, yasuraka ni.

Sleep in peace
As I hold you in my arms…

nen’-ne n’ korori yo, o-korori yo.
anta wa yoigo da, nen’-ne shi na.

Sleep, Sleep, My sweet child.
You’re such a good girl, Now it’s time to sleep.

That is a sad song! Reading the translation while I listen to it, the last few lines really do make me tear up.

    • RD himself even complemented me on how I translated that last part (・∀・)

When I found that out all was all fluttery and couldn’t do anything for an hour XD

Oh yeah, that reminded me that I meant to congratulate you when I saw that compliment, it somewhat slipped my mind after it came back down to earth from the “Holy hell did that seriously just happen” phase of thought.

        Annnnyways, massive congratulations on that!

  1. This song is so beautiful and sad,RD-Sounds is so amazing.Thank you for the translations!

Woah. Didn’t expect to see an 永遠の巫女 arrangement. I can’t hear the melody of the originals playing through but the “feel” created by the instruments is really similar to the originals..

  2. This one is my favorite song in the past 4 years. Before I can realize the meaning of the lyric, the melody has already take me to another world every single time when I listen to it.

    Really excellent work Kafkafuura.
