Ren’ai Circulation – Sengoku Nadeko’s Theme (Bakemonogatari OP4)

^Sengoku Nadeko :>

This song is cute. That’s pretty much it.
I skipped the OP3 for Bakemonogatari – I should probably do it. You know. Sometime.

I’d be cool if I could do another one post for every day of the week thing, but I’m busy~! Maybe I’ll be able to pull off one every two days!

Thanks to stormwyrm for catching some of my mistakes in transcription and offering some new insights to the translation :)

TLNotes:

  • “Every journey begins with the first step” – identical to the Japanese saying
  • Stone and Will are both “ishi” いし
  • “If you gather up enough dust you’ll have a mountain and Nadeshiko?” – the saying is “If you gather up (enough) dust, it will become a mountain (with time/effort etc.) “chiri mo tsumoreba yama to naru”. Nadeko replaces naru with nadeshiko. – Nadeshiko being the word representing an idealistic young Japanese beauty. Literally “pampered girl”. Nadeko’s name uses the same characters, but without the past inflection I take it to mean “girl you want to pet” ^w^.
  • “「し」抜きで いや 死ぬ気で” – “‘shi’ nuki de iya shinuki de!” – “take out the ‘shi'” and “with a great effort” are said in the exact same way. Taking out the shi turns Nadeshiko into Nadeko; where as 死ぬ気 is literally feeling of “death”.. think kind of like “live like you’re dying”… well sort of – similar in meaning to 必死 (hisshi) “certain death” meaning “desperate effort”.
  • “Fuwafuwari/Fuwafuwaru” – Nadeko’s making a verb out of fuwa fuwa (think fuwa fuwa time), which means light and airy or fluffy.
  • “Kurakurari/Kurakuraru” – Nadeko’s making a very out of kura kura, which means the feeling of dizziness (think of Nadeko after Sugura Kanbaru rushes past her and she spins around and has spirals in her eyes.

でも そんなんじゃ だめ
もう そんなんじゃ ほら
心は進化するよ
もっと もっと

But that’s no good!
Already, I mean, look!
My heart’s evolving,
More and more!

言葉にすれば消えちゃう関係なら
言葉を消せばいいやって
思ってた 恐れてた
だけど あれ? なんかちがうかも…

Since it’s a relationship that would disappear if I put it into words,
Then if I just don’t say anything it’ll be alright!
So I thought, So I feared,
But wait? Isn’t there something wrong about this?

せんりのみちもいっぽから!
石のようにかたい そんな意思で
ちりもつもればやまとなでしこ?
「し」抜きで いや 死ぬ気で!

Every journey begins with the first step!
With a will as tough as stone,
“If you gather up enough dust you’ll have a mountain? or ideal Nadeshiko?”
If you take out the ‘shi’ ; wait I mean “If you work hard!”

ふわふわり ふわふわる
あなたが名前を呼ぶ
それだけで
宙へ浮かぶ

Fuwafuwari ~ Fuwafuwaru ~
I call out your name,
And just with that
I’m floating into space!

ふわふわる ふわふわり
あなたが笑っている
それだけで
笑顔になる

Fuwafuwaru ~ Fuwafuwari ~
If you’re smiling,
That’s all I need
To make me smile too!

神様 ありがとう
運命のいたずらでも
めぐり逢えたことが
しあわせなの

Thank you god ~ ♥
Even if this is just a trick of fate,
Meeting him like this
Makes me so happy ~ ♥

でも そんなんじゃ だめ
もう そんなんじゃ ほら
心は進化するよ
もっと もっと

But that’s no good!
Already, I mean, look!
My heart’s evolving,
More and more!

そう そんなんじゃ やだ
ねぇ そんなんじゃ まだ
私のこと 見ててね
ずっと ずっと

Yeah, I don’t like that,
Hey, I’m not ready yet,
So just keep looking at me ok?
Forever and ever ~ ♥

私の中のあなたほど
あなたの中の私の存在は
まだまだ 大きくないことも
わかってるけれど

I know that the me
Inside of you is not yet
As strong as the you
Inside of me, but…

今この同じ 瞬間
共有してる 実感
ちりもつもればやまとなでしこ!
略して? ちりつもやまとなでこ!

Now at this very instant
We have shared feelings!
If you gather up enough dust you’ll have a mountain? an ideal Nadeshiko!
Shorten it? Gather dust, you’ll have an ideal Nadeko!

くらくらり くらくらる
あなたを見上げたら
それだけで
まぶしすぎて

Kurakurari ~ Kurakuraru ~
When I look up at you,
With just that
I feel dizzy!

くらくらる くらくらり
あなたを想っている
それだけで
とけてしまう

Kurakuraru ~ Kurakurari ~
When I’m thinking of you
Only that,
I melt!

神様 ありがとう
運命のいたずらでも
めぐり逢えたことが
しあわせなの

Thank you god ~ ♥
Even if this is just a trick of fate,
Meeting him like this
Makes me so happy ~ ♥

The song is practically impossible to translate in some places, and I salute your efforts…

The song cleverly makes a portmanteau of the proverb ‘塵も積もれば山と成る’ (chiri mo tsumoreba yama to naru) and the term 大和撫子 (Yamato nadeshiko), which means a woman who displays the traditional feminine virtues of old Japan (‘Yamato’). The song did not use the kanji for mountain (山) the way the proverb does, nor does it use the kanji for Yamato (大和), so it seems the line ちりもつもればやまとなでしこ? may also be alternatively rendered ‘If you gather enough dust you’ll have an ideal girl?’

If you remove the ‘shi’ from Nadeshiko, obviously you get ‘Nadeko’, which is yet another implication behind the line 「し」抜きで いや 死ぬ気で!And of course the kanji for death ‘死’ is also pronounced ‘shi’…

This seems par for the course for Nisio Isin’s writing, from what I’ve heard of it.

    • I made a few small changes according to your suggestion :D Thanks! I didn’t think of the やまと=大和 thing.

By the way, I just noticed that there’s an error in your transcript.

    The bridge portion should read:

    コイスル キセツハ ヨクバリ circulation
    コイスル キモチハ ヨクバリ circulation
    コイスル ヒトミハ ヨクバリ circulation
    コイスル オトメハ ヨクバリ circulation

Note that the third line reads ‘hitomi’ not ‘hitori’ as you’ve rendered it. At least that’s what the scans I have show, no question about it, and listening to the song itself I hear a ‘mi’ rather than a ‘ri’ there too. So it would mean something like ‘these loving eyes are a passionate circulation’ perhaps.

    • thanks again – sometimes the scans I get are a bit blurry or I look at them too fast :< I should be more careful when I'm transcribing D:

The BEST translation I’ve seen so far!
You did it very very well.
