Uso to Doukoku

^So I couldn’t find a suitably despairing picture for the top, so just cry and cry and cry and cry at the end to make up for it.

Requested by: Miona21, Zesan, and others.

Phew, RD’s songs always make me cry. I think it’s going to be impossible to capture everything in this song because the whole folkness of it is so perfect and crystallized that I have to break it up a bit to translate. I mean the repetition and flow and progession is flawless… Just keep in mind that I’m not doing it justice. Really, this guy makes learning Japanese worth it.

Also, Ranko’s voice is perfect for the end.

Phew I’m exhausted. December is exhausting. I should rest – but I need to work! Work!

There is hardly anyone left to speak of this tale
A distant memory, swept away by the many years that have past…

narande yorisou hito to oni no sugata
utagau koto wo shiranu hodo chiisa na chiisa na sono sugata

Once there was a human and an oni that held each other close
They were both so young they didn’t know to doubt each other…

shinrai no sono akashi
yubikirigenman hitotsu

As proof of their trust
They swore…

chikatta wa uso wo tsukanu koto
zutto soba ni iru yo to
youchi na yakusoku hitotsu

To never lie
To always be together
A promise that children make.

otogi no kuni no koimonogatari
narabitatsu kage futatsu igyou katadoru

This tale of love in a fairy tale land
Places these two shadows next to each other, odd though it was…

mada minu yukusue
kataru ga gotoku

And the wind did cry
As if it were telling

doko to yuku saki wakaranu
kaze ga naku

Of their future neither it
Nor they did know

Though there is no one left to speak of how or when,
The bonds they made together were close, strong, and unchanging…

narande yorisou hito to oni no sugata
shinzuru koto ni akanu hodo itoshii itoshii sono sugata

And so there was a human and an oni that held each other close
They never tired of trust in each other, so lovely they were, in love…

yakusoku wo kawashiau
taisuru hito no nozomi wa

And they made a promise
Which was…

keshite namida wo misenu koto
oni no nakigao nanzo wa
mitaku wa nai no da to

To never make the other cry
“An oni crying is
The -last- thing I want to see!”

otogi no kuni no koimonogatari
ikuyo no hate ni futari wa chigiri wo kawasu

This tale of love in a fairy tale land
Tells that after a time, the two made their vows

naraba waraou to
mirai wo kataru

“Now let us smile and laugh!”
They would talk of their futures

sore wa doko made mo
shiawase na sugata

And there were none
So happy as they

ikutoshi ga sugisatte
hatato kaeranai kare wa

Some years passed them by
And then suddenly he did not come home

yukue wo sagasareru mama
kawarihateta sono sugata
aware na oni ni sarashita

By the time they found him
He was no longer the same
And there stood an oni in despair

otogi no kuni no koimonogatari
yatou ka sore tomo hate wa ayakashi no shiwaza ka

This tale of love lost in a fairy tale land
Does not tell; Was it a night thief, an ayakashi?

nido to ugokanu
sono sugata kara

All she knew
Looking over him

mohaya yakusoku nado
yaburareta no da to shitta

Was that their
Promise was broken

houkou doukoku daichi yurasu
mohaya monoiwanu mukuro no mae de

She screamed and she cried, shaking the very earth
In front of his corpse that would no longer speak

“uso tsukime!! uragirimono me!
yakusoku hitotsu mamorenu nanjyakumono me…!”

“You liar!!! You betrayed me!!
You weakling! You couldn’t even keep this one promise…!”

kyuudan no koe mo tsui ni wa munashiku hibiku nomi

And eventually her accusations echoed emptily.

sakebi hate,
 tsukarehate,
  tachitsukusu,
   oni no me ni wa,
    -namida.

Her voice lost,
 Exhausted
  She stood
   And in her eyes
    -Were tears.

Ranko did a wonderful job for this song.

Anyway, searching Danbooru helps for a sad Suika.

small correction: the original is missing power, not broken moon. forestpireo mislabeled it in the album booklet and later corrected it on their website (and rd-sounds has it as missing power on tuduri).
gut-wrenching song, even after half a year and dozens of listens. got choked up when i first heard it (4:00-4:10, my god.), and the lyrics make it even more powerful. thanks a lot for translating.

    • Just made the change – thanks.

Yeah… it’s one of those songs that really hits you. I tear up for most of RD’s songs, but this one in particular…
