Part of me thinks I could have made the translation a little cooler, but well – まあね.
Anyway, I was going to do Cruel Cruel two days ago, and well – I’ll probably do it next… I just had to do this song when it came out, and – it’s easier… XD
Notes:
Missolonghi is a “sacred town of the immortal heroes”. A town in the west of Greece whose population was slaughtered in its Third Siege (1826); as they attempted to break out. 3000 severed heads and all that good stuff.
I was like 100% sure when I first listened to this song that the eins zwei drei! part was “I survive tonight!”

”螺旋のように”
I don’t know that much Japanese, but I know that when「のように」is used, the noun before the ｢の｣ is modified, so it would be something like “Like (insert noun placed before the ｢の｣).”, “like” being used as part of the simile statement.
That would mean that ”螺旋のように” would much more accurately translate as “Like (a/the) spiral”. I don’t know what’s with the varying translations of that; that grammatical rule looks pretty much set in stone. Even Google Translate translates that as “Like a spiral”. If you wanted to say “Everything is spiraling”, the best I would be able to think of is either ｢すべてのものは螺旋する」which is a product of using the do-verb ｢する｣, or ｢すべてのものは回って居る」, which renders more along the lines of “Everything is spinning”.
Sorry to unload the product of my pet peeve with that simple translation discrepancy. But it’s really weird when you hear a translation of “Like a spiral”, then you hear a translation of “Spiral of doom” and then a translation of “Everyhing is spiraling”.
You’re absolutely right.
I wrote “everything is spiraling” to keep the mood/flow intact.
The exact translation of 螺旋のように is “like a spiral”. Meaning the line would read “(It’s) like a spiral”. “It’s” links back to survival game (or a vague sense of “everything around – what I’m thinking of/perceiving etc.” which in this case is also the survival game.), so it’s more like “This survival game is like a spiral.” or “Everything is like a spiral.” You don’t want to put two “survival game”s so close together, so you’re stuck with either “It’s like a spiral”. or “Everything’s like a spiral”.
The line above it is so metaphor-action rich that jumping down to a simple simile felt wrong. (It flows well enough in Japanese, but not in English).
When your head is spinning do you say, “Everything’s like a spiral” or “Everything’s spiraling”? (Ok, so you’d probably say “spinning”, but the point is…) They mean just about the same thing. One is a metaphor and one is a simile. Everything’s spiraling is a metaphor because, well, stuff doesn’t actually spin around people all that often or “spiral”.

I use strict translations where I think they work and mess around with other structures that have the same or similar meanings if I think I can better preserve the tone that way.
Hope that clears that up a bit.
Whether what I did with that line was great or blasphemous is a matter of opinion I think.
But yes, my first draft had that line simply as “like a spiral”.
